The role of the ETO – or electro-technical officer – onboard a superyacht is something of a mystery to many. Ask crew or captains about ETOs and they might respond: “Oh, the AV guy?” or “Well, you can’t defi ne what they do really, can you?” 

Their responsibilities have transmuted over time, from taking on GMDSS and radar responsibilities to providing an IT surgery for the crew whose Skype cut out at midnight to making sure all the onboard trappings of the 21st century keep ticking over.
